It will be possible—and sometimes strongly encouraged—for students to take other graduate level courses (in biology, mathematics and computer science) at UC Denver or from any other UC campus to achieve the appropriate distribution of expertise that the program is seeking in its students. Students must obtain prior approval from their graduate adviser or program director before taking such courses. The following list summarizes some of the available courses in biology, mathematics and computer science that have been identified to fill in deficient content areas of study.
BIOI 7210 Introduction to Computer Science.
Credits: 3 semester hours.
Status: elective.
Overview of artificial intelligence methods, theories, and applications. Relationships between artificial intelligence and psychology, linguistics and philosophy. Introduction to artificial intelligence programming.
BIOI 7410 Introduction to Bayesian Statistics.
Credits: 3 semester hours.
Status: elective.
Introduction to Bayesian statistical methods. Covers prior and posterior distributions, conjugate models, single and multi–parameter models, hierarchical models, mixture models, numerical methods for evaluating posterior distributions, Monte Carlo methods and Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations.
BIOI 7791 Readings in Bioinformatics.
Credits: 1 semester hour.
Prerequisite: permission of instructor.
Status: elective.
This is a seminar style course requiring significant student participation.
BIOI 7792 Special Topics in Bioinformatics.
Credits: 1 to 3 semester hours.
Prerequisites: BIOI 7711, 7712 and permission of instructor.
Status: elective.
Variable credit depending on the student's needs. This course is listed to provide opportunities for the advanced student to participate in special courses that periodically address new and emerging technologies, methodologies or related bioinformatics theories. Class participation is required, which differs from the format of the Independent Study course that only requires faculty supervision.
BIOI 7785 Independent Study.
Credits: 1 to 3 semester hours.
Prerequisite: BIOI 7711, 7712 and permission of instructor.
Status: elective.
Variable credit depending on the student's needs. This course is listed for the benefit of the advanced student who desires to pursue one or more topics in considerable depth. Supervision by a full-time faculty member is necessary.
