The application deadline for Fall Admissions is January 1st of the same year.
Applicants with broad educational backgrounds are encouraged to apply to the program. The admissions committee considers individual applicants on a case-by-case basis. Preference is given to applicants with interdisciplinary training in computer science, mathematics and biology. The number of new admissions per year is restricted by available scholarship/fellowship support, the applicant's interest in relation to faculty research interests, and availability of faculty mentors. On average, the program attempts to admit three to four applicants per year.
- Email a short note to compbio@uchsc.edu stating that you intend to apply to the Computational Bioscience Ph.D. Program.
- Download and complete the UC Denver Graduate School application that is available at the Graduate School web site located at http://www.uchsc.edu/gs/gs/.
- Submit a personal "Statement of Interest" that outlines your interests, experiences and long-range goals. If you are an international student applicant, you are required to submit an official report of a satisfactory score on the "Test of English as a Foreign Language" (TOEFL), or other demonstration of adequate English language skills. Make sure you pay an initial application fee (specified by the Graduate School), payable to UC Denver.
You are not considered an applicant until you have paid the application fee.
Prerequisites
Our admissions criteria are based, in part, on the requirements of the UC Denver Graduate School that address prior performance criteria. They are also partly based on the program's need to recruit students with broad science backgrounds and/or work experiences in the life sciences and computing arenas.
- An official report, with scores and date of completion, that demonstrates successfully completing at least three major areas of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
- Three letters of recommendation that address the applicant's potential for advanced study and independent research
- A personal "Statement of Interest" from the applicant that outlines his/her interest, experiences and long-range goals
- If the applicant is an international student: an official report of a satisfactory score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or other demonstration of adequate English language skills is required
- An initial application fee (as specified by the Graduate School, see above) paid to the order of UC Denver.
Demonstration of adequate computational background. Applicants must provide evidence of AT LEAST ONE of the following computational qualifications:
- A Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, mathematics or biostatistics, or:
- A Master's degree in another scientific field with a special emphasis in computational methods. Applicants and are encouraged to take the GRE computer science subject exam to demonstrate their knowledge of computer science, or:
- A score on the GRE computer science subject exam that indicates knowledge equivalent to a Master's degree in computer science.
Applicants with Master's degrees must provide an official transcript from the degree granting institution. Applicants without a Master's degree must provide employment experience that is the equivalent of upper-level undergraduate computer science courses. Applicants may submit scores on the GRE computer science subject as evidence of equivalent experience, or other well-documented evidence that might persuade the admissions committee.
Demonstration of adequate biological background. Applicants must have AT LEAST ONE of the following biological qualifications:
- Successful completion of at least one upper–level undergraduate or lower–level graduate course in biology. Applicants with additional biology course work will be given preference in admission. Applicants must provide an official transcript demonstrating this course work, or:
- Employment experience that is the equivalent of upper–level undergraduate biology courses. Scores on the GRE biology subject exam may be submitted as evidence of equivalent experience, or:
- Other well–documented evidence that might persuade the admissions committee
- An interview by one or more members of the program admissions committee and/or other designated program faculty. We will contact applicants about arranging interviews.
