Recent teaching
For the past couple of years I've taught LING 5200, Computational corpus linguistics at the Boulder campus.
Past teaching
I did most of my teaching in the pre-Internet era, so I don't have web pages for those courses. Things I've taught in the past:
- I've taught many sections of an "Introduction to Language" course for undergraduates. It's actually my favorite thing to teach in the entire world. The course is an introduction to basic linguistic concepts and analysis. I give it a stong sociolinguistic slant. I keep it fresh for myself (and hopefully my students) by always having some implicit theme for the class, and by varying the theme from semester to semester. Past themes have included:
- child language acquisition
- linguistic imperialism
- signed languages
- animal communication
- the grammar of Ibibio
- undergraduate psycholinguistics (cross-listed as a psychology course)
- phonetics for linguistics undergraduates and graduate students from other departments
- Software engineering: I've taught Perl programming in a variety of venues to a variety of audiences, including linguists, software testers, and an MD. I've also taught an ongoing class on software testing techniques at Mapquest.com.
