LING
5200: Homework 1
This homework is due by the beginning of class on Thursday, Sept. 4. You can submit it in any of the following ways:
- In class, typed or neatly written.
- Before class, via email, as an attached .txt file, or as an attached .pdf file, or within the body of your email. Please do not submit it as an attached Word document.
- On the first day of class, I gave you a copy of
Chapter 1 of a book by McEnery and Wilson. Read it, and
then answer this question: A lot of pages in that chapter are devoted
to arguing against the stereotypical Chomskyan take on the use of
corpus data. From your perspective as someone who's gotten their
linguistic education in the 21st century, did they need to talk about
that, or are they fighting a battle that's already been won? Has your
experience been that linguists generally assume McEnery and Wilson's
point of view, or would you say that rationalism continues to rule not
just as a philosophy, but as a technique, in linguistics? One
paragraph will suffice.
- Make sure that you are on the class mailing list. Write I am on the
class mailing list if you are on it.
- Make sure that you have an account on babel. Write I have an account on babel if you do.
- Make sure that you can log on to the machines in HUMN 1B35. Write I can log on to the machines in ECME 269 if you can.
- What program do we use to connect to a remote Unix machine?
